On June 1st 1911, the first air squadrons were established in the Ottoman Empire. They were used for reconnaissance and bombing during the Balkan Wars of 1912-13, one of the earliest combat uses of aircraft. Today, the Turkish Air Force is one of the largest in NATO, with between 250 and 300 combat aircraft, primarily F-16 fighters.
